A rather controversial game, 177 takes its name from the Japanese law system where it is the code number for rape crimes. Casting you as a rapist, the idea of the game is to chase a woman through a forest while avoiding various obstacles.
In fact, 177 caused so much controversy that at one point it was recalled, but was re-released after a number of scenes were deleted from the game.

"Can you cut it at the police academy?
Fall in! You are about to take on the real life responsibility of a uniformed peace officer. Listen up! You'll need to sharpen your eye as well as your aim. The Sergeant may be harsh, but deep down he's your best friend. Pay attention on the target range because once you hit the streets, it seems a lot more real.
Who's lurking in the shadows? In that doorway! On the fire escape! Split second decisions in real-life situations put you in the heart of the action. Are you ready for the unknown that awaits in that dark and dangerous alley?
Filmed on location at a major metropolitan police academy."

You control the movements of the passenger in the lead car as he plummets down the spectacularly steep hills and careens around the gravity-defying curves of the Crazy Coaster. Will you be able to keep his arms raised throughout the ride without sending him flying off into space?!"

Air Raid was released in 1979 on the first Compucolor Soft-Disk along with three other games (Race, Quintominoes, Rover Robot).
This is no drill, you've got radar confirmation: enemy bombers carrying nuclear weapons are approaching with fighter escorts. Man the anti-aircraft gun - your country is depending on you to bring them down!
Air Raid is an excellent game for 1979 and plays very well. It was inspired by [Anti-Aircraft](/software/anti-aircraft/) from Atari, an arcade game released in 1975.
This version from Compucolor add an excellent feature: ballistic. Indeed, all your bullets go up but then will eventually fall back down to the ground, in nice curved trajectories.
An essential game for the Compucolor computer!

"Here is your chance to become an artillery commander, a submarine captain or an aircraft bombardier. Just hit the firing button an hit your way through 27 different shooting games and variations. Planes, boats and other targets appear on the screen from different directions at different speeds. Shoot'em off your TV screen with guided missiles, torpedoes and anti-aircraft guns."
All games end after 2 minutes, 16 seconds of play, or when either player scores 99 points. During the last 16 seconds, the score will flash to show that the game is nearing the end.
**Anti-Aircraft**\
In this games, from one to six flying objects will move together across the playfield in a set. All objects in the set must be hit before a new set will appear. Each object scores one point. The joystick changes the angle of your "Anti-Aircraft Gun" and also the angle of the missile flight in the Guided Missile variation.
Anti-Aircraft is directly inspired by the [Anti-Aircraft arcade game](/software/anti-aircraft/) released in 1975, also from Atari.
**Torpedo**\
You are a submarine captain firing torpedoes at ships moving above you. You can move your submarine left or right with your joystick. You control half the playfield, your opponent controls the other half. From one to six ships move across the playfield in a set. When one set disappears from the playfield, a new set appears. Each ship scores one point.
Torpedo is almost the same game as Anti-Aircraft, except that you control submarines, not anti-aircraft guns, and you joystick is used to move them left or right instead of the angle of your gun. Various ships replace the planes and helicopters.
In some of the variations, mines travel randomly across the bottom of the playfield, and act as obstructions to your line of fire. The ships move at different speed and directions. Each ship has a different point value. Hitting the mines will score no points.
Even if Torpedo is very similar to Anti-Aircraft, it's also clear that it has been inspired by the popular [Sea Wolf arcade game](/software/sea-wolf/), released in 1976 by Midway.
**Shooting Gallery**\
In this game, you can change the angle of fire (up=30°, center=60°, down=90°). In addition you can move your "gun" across your half of the playfield by moving your joystick left or right. So Shooting Gallery is a kind of mix between Anti-Aircraft and Torpedo.
The targets will change direction at any time and all targets in a "set" must be hit before new targets are displayed. Each target has a different point score. (rabbit = 3 points, duck = 2 points, clown = 1 point).
**Polaris**\
In Polaris you captain a ship travelling automatically across the bottom of the playfield. You control its speed with the joystick (up=fast, center=normal, down=slow) and your missile speed if acceted by the speed you had when you fired. The ship will also change direction occasionally.
Front one to four planes fly over in a "set". All planes in a set must be hit before new planes are displayed. Each plane has a different point value.
**Bomber**\
Bomber is based on the same principle as Polaris, except you are the pilot of a plane flying across the top of the playfield. The right player controls the bottom-most plane. Planes will occasionally change direction from right to left.
From one to four ships will pass under the planes. As a ship is hit, a new ship will replace it from the edge of the playfield. Ships travel at various speed and each a different point value.
**Polaris vs Bomber**\
The left player flies the plane across the top of the playfield and the right player controls the ship at the bottom of the playfield. The plane drops bombs on the ship while the ship shoots missiles at the plane. One point is scored for each hit. The ship or plane getting hit will disappear from the playfield and reappear at the edge. Both plane and ship will change direction occasionally.
In some versions, travelling randomly across the middle of the playfield are mines. In order to hit your opponent, you have to get around the mines which act as obstructions to your line of fire. The mines score no points when hit.
In an interview (see link below), Larry Kaplan, programmer of Air-Sea battle says:
*"Air-Sea Battle was based on an Atari coin-op called Anti-Aircraft. In those days, we just ripped off anything we could make work. The development process was a nightmare in the beginning. We had a time share service we reached via a teletype to do our editing and assembling. Then we downloaded to a development kit that had only a display and some address switches. Extremely primitive and difficult to use, it made game programming even more difficult."*

"You are responsible for defending the Earth against an army of alien invaders. The task is not easy. The attackers relentlessly descend toward the Earth as they fire their missile salvos in an attempt to destroy you."
Alien Invasion is an obvious illegal clone of arcade hit Space Invaders from Taito (1978). It is apparently the first adaptation of Space Invaders on a home video game system. And not a bad one considering the system possibilities and the early date.
This version offers some interesting variations from the Arcade version: the 10 options let you specify the number of alien missiles fired at the same time (2 or 4), the number of missiles fired at the same time by the players (1 or 2) and number of players (1 player, 2 players alternate, 2 players cooperative). This last mode, 2 players playing at the same time, is quite innovtaive.
Alien Invasion was the last cartridge produced for the system (Channel F II at the time), by Zircon. It was apparently sold only through mail-order, and was possibly the most complicated game for the console.
Alien Invasion is also known as one of the first games to feature easter eggs (along with other 1978 games, the very first being the Fairchild Channel F demo cart released in 1976!).

An interesting prototype, this is a fascinating look at an early version of one of the Jag's most famous games. While far from complete, it is still remarkably similar to the released version.
There are no menu screens or intro, the game automatically starts straight after the title screen. The action takes place in an area identified as sub level 2, and it's possible that this is an early level design test. The Marine is the only playable character but a number of features from the final game are present.
The Alien, Facehugger and Predator enemy sprites are all here, the Alien being of a different design to that in the final version. The Alien in the released version is not only the wrong colour, but speaking as a massive fan of the Aliens series, something just seems wrong with the model in general. It would have been nice to see the Alien model used here developed further as with proper animation it would have looked far more authentic.
Spawning points for the enemies are active and basic AI is implemented, the enemy sprites will chase you but tend to easily get stuck on scenery and objects (a problem that was still present in the final release). It seems that the animation is not yet complete as enemies never attack you and collision detection between player and enemy sprites has not yet been implemented, allowing you to walk through them. Elevators are here, but not working, along with the armoury, docking bay and the Alien ship.
The motion tracker and timer don't work yet and the score doesn't increase when you kill enemies. While the hud shows all weapons as being selectable and you can switch to the other weapons, the Pulse Rifle remains in the main view which probably indicates that sprites for the other weapons had not yet been completed. A point of interest here is that the hud shows a pistol and a knife as being available, these were replaced in the final version by the shotgun and smart gun. The presence of the knife is particularly interesting. In the final version, the knife would have been almost useless as the acid splash that occurs when killing an Alien would quickly kill the player, but here the Aliens explode and disappear when killed, so the knife may well have been a viable weapon as the acid doesn't seem to be present in this version.
While a lot of this is just speculation on my part, it would be wonderful to hear from anyone involved in the making of this game, especially if they can reveal any more info about this prototype version.

Believed to be based on the crossover comic books by Dark Horse Comics, it appears that AVP was in development when Atari decided to stop supporting the Lynx, a fact which is backed up by a screen in the game which gives the copyright date as 1994.
This particular version is in quite an advanced state, although it only features the Marine and the Predator. It would seem that the Alien had not yet been implemented in this version, but was to be added later in development as a playable character. This idea is supported by the fact that another prototype is known to exist which also features the Alien as a playable character, screenshots from which are at the Operation 9 site (see the link at the bottom of the page). It is believed that this version of the game is unique, and that only a single hard copy exists.
According to an article on Wikipeadia, it's unknown whether the version which contains all three characters was made before or after the version shown here. I would speculate that it is a more advanced beta version, possibly the final beta before a release candidate would have been completed, and is therefore a later version as it's unlikely that the Alien would have been removed at this stage. After all, if it was unlikely that the Alien would appear in the game, why was it's artwork completed to the same level as the other characters?
A very competent looking game, it seems to be a mix of first person shooter and a maze. The mission objective is slightly different with both the Marine and Predator, but in both cases you must find a bomb that is located on the Predator's ship. There are no enemies present in either mission, only a single Marine that wanders around the ship with you. Again, the fact that there are no Aliens anywhere to be seen would seem to lend weight to the argument that this is an earlier beta then the one which contains all three characters.
This title had plenty of potential and could well have been one of the Lynx's greatest games. It's a real shame that it remains unfinished.

AVP must surely be responsible for selling a large percentage of Jaguar consoles on the strength of its name and screenshots alone. There are a number of reviews on the internet which award the game 90-100%, which, frankly, I find astonishing! Most of them praise this game and hold it aloft as one of the Jaguar's finest, and they are right, it is. But it's nowhere near as good as some people would have you believe.
Set in a space station which has been overrun by Aliens, the Predators arrive on a hunt. The story wouldn't win any prizes for originality, but it sets the scene nicely.
You can play as the last surviving Marine, an Alien or a Predator, which is a nice touch, but its all downhill from there.
While the game looks good in screenshots, you need to see this game in action to believe it. Aliens come hobbling towards you as if they have been severely crippled by arthritis, happily bumping into walls and other objects. Things are so bad that as the Marine you can walk backwards faster than the Aliens can run forwards. See a group of Aliens and don't have any ammo? Simply walk backwards without bumping into anything and they disappear into the distance. Or, even better, watch as they get confused by a large table, giving you plenty of time to stop, turn around, and stroll to safety. In fact, as the acid left behind when an Alien is killed does damage to the player when walked over, it's best to use these tactics to get to an open space and wait for the Aliens to (eventually) turn up than shoot them in a corridor.
When playing as the Alien things are better speed wise (you can move much faster than the Marines, as Aliens should), but problems still exist. The only real danger comes from groups of Marines. Thanks to the games dodgy AI, lone Marines are quite happy to stand still while you charge towards them, and often manage to get themselves killed without even firing a single shot.
Despite all this AVP is still pretty playable, and it makes a nice alternative to [Wolfenstein 3D](/software/wolfenstein-3d/) and [Doom](/software/doom/). Just don't expect too much from it.

After [Gotcha!](/software/gotcha/) from Atari released in 1973, Amazing Maze is the second maze arcade game.
The idea is quite simple. The computer draws a different maze for each game. There are only two exits, left and right. Left player must reach the right exit before the right player reach the left exit. The first one to exit wins the game.
Though the graphics and principle are quite unsophisticated, the gameplay is excellent and very surprising for such an early game. It's really a very good 2-player game (it's also possible to play against the system).
Inevitably, Amazing Maze inspired many other maze games and can be considered the father many many video games.

Strange small logic game where each player must reach other player's planet first. The player from the planet ODD tries to reach the planet EVEN before the player from the planet EVEN reaches the planet ODD.
The movement principle is as follows: the EVEN player may move only to a square whose number combines with ODD's last move to total to an even number. ODD may move to a square whose number totals to an ODD figure when combined with EVEN's last move...
In fact the Odyssey is almost only used for moving electronic chips on a playing board (the plastic overlay).

You control anti-aircraft cannons and must shoot down as many planes as possible, or more than your opponent. Each cannon has 3 firing positions. Choose the right one and shoot at the attacking airplanes!
Atari Anti-Aircraft arcade game must be seen as the precursor of the many "shooting gallery" and shoot'em up videogames to come in the following years.
The game has an undocumented option available that switches the planes into UFO's graphics (see video below) !!

Astro Command is a clone of the arcade hit Scramble from Konami (1980), and quite a good one considered the limited features of the Epoch Cassette Vision console. Its is also one of the latest games released for the Cassette Vision. It's clear the that programmers tried to push the system to its limits.
As in the original version, your fuel is limited and you must constantly keep an eye on its level (upper left number on the screenshots). If it reachs zero, your ship will crash. So you have to keep destroying fuel tanks on your way to keep the fuel level high.
Each game is divided into four levels:\
\- the city: avoid ground missiles and destroy mines while flying over the space cuty\
\- enemy base: maneuver smartly inside the tight corridors of the enemy base\
\- the cave: avoid missiles launched from the ground and the ceiling\
\- the boss: after the laser barrier, fight the big boss. Kill it by shooting in its center five times.
The game is one player only but offers 2 difficulty levels.
As usual with the Cassette Vision when games require 4 driections movement, the controls are difficult to get used to, as there are no up/down built-in the console. Here the left player leveler is used to move your ship up/down while the two action buttons are used to move forward/backward. Cumbersome.

Atari Basketball is an early basketball game ported in 1979 from the [original Atari 2600 version](/software/basketball/) (released in december 1978).
The programmer, Alan Miller, is also the same person who designed the original version! No surprise here if the gameplay is faithful to the Atari 2600 version.
However, thanks to the great features of the Atari computers, this version is superior to its console counterpart. The graphics are better, the animation too and it's possible to play with up to four players with an 1t&ri 400 or 800 (they have 4 controller ports built-in).

Atari Basketball (arcade) oddly enough came out after the [Atari 2600 version](/software/basketball/), which is rare because generally it's the opposite, Arcade games are often adapted to home consoles or computers. Yet the relationship between these two versions is obvious. It is therefore clearly the same project.
One can legitimately ask whether in fact the arcade project did not start first but took longer to be developed. We would have to ask the question to the developers: Chris Downend for the arcade version and Alan Miller for the Atari 2600.
The arcade game is one of the first (with Atari Football) to use a trackball, two in fact for paced two player action.
As described for the Atari 2600 version, Basketball was the first "real" basketball videogame. There has been pong variations before, but this basketball game from Atari was the first to use human shaped players and a pseudo-3D playfield, along with real basketball features like dribbling, blocking, stealing and adjustable shots.

Atari football is considered the first real sport simulation video game, with its 7 seven players on each team, detailed playfield graphics, 4 offensive tactics and 4 defensive tactics.
Before that, sports games meant pong-type video games such as tennis, hockey or football. But let's face it, there were mainly pong spin-offs, not real efforts to simulate sport rules.
Of course there was also **Football** for the [Magnavox Odyssey](/museum/magnavox-odyssey/), released in 1972; but if the effort was laudable, the system technical limitations prevented the game from being a real simulation.
Apart from that, Atari Football is also the first video game to use a trackball as the controller. A 4 players version was even released in 1979, with 4 trackballs!

Attack Force is based on Targ arcade game released the same year (1980) by Exidy. Bill Hogue and Big Five Software must have worked fast to release their version only a few month later. As Bill Hogue explained in an interview, they naturally got their inspiration from latest games they used to play at the local arcade...
The playing field is made up of a 5 by 7 grid of blocks (a city) while the original arcade version is made of a 9 by 9 grid.
You maneuver your ship on the playfield using the "streets" drawn by the blocks and you must destroy all the ramships which logically try to ram you. While they can't fire back at you, you must avoid them at all cost as any contact will destroy your ship.
One additional feature compared to the original Targ is the flagships! Flagships are waiting at the right side of the screen sometimes flashing ramships to turn them into more aggressive ships. When all ramships are destroyed, flagships enter the playfield. You must then destroy all of them to change level before they disintegrate you with their very deadly laser bolt.
Flaghips are Big Five Software icons. They appear in all their games since the first release ([Super Nova](/software/super-nova/)). The dreaded flagship has an evil rotating eye and also possess a very deadly laser bolt.
The arcade conversion made by Bill Hogue was very good given the limitation of the TRS-80 hardware. Attack Force plays like Targ (and even more) including the variable speed of your ship.

"Avenger! The boldest jet fighter ever to roam the skies. It's Electra Game new single-player video combat game. You're in the lifelike cockpit of this sleeck, black attack plane surrounded by the realistic instrumental panel. Suddenly a "bandit" aircraft lurking behind a cloud bursts into the open, intent on ramming you head on. You line up the enemy in your sights. You fire your cannon and watch him litteraly explode in the air. You've won this one - but watch out, there's another and another. Avenger, it's competitive. It's terrific!"
You can accelerate by using the "afterburner" switch, and thus get higher score.
Avenger may be the first shoot'em up with vertical scrolling. To be confirmed.

This is one of the earliest Backgammon videogame along with the [Channel F Backgammon](/software/backgammon-acey-deucy/) released the year before (1977).
There are two game variations:\
\- two players game\
\- play against the computer
This is an important point: to be able to play against the computer. In 1978 it was not that common.
The graphics are quite decent for such an early version.

The first baseball videogame ever. But, as usual with the Odyssey, the gameplay is limited. It's still: player 1 tries to throw ball past player 2, player 2 tries to intercept it and throw back ball past player 1. Another "tennis" variation in fact.
Fortunately, a nice colorful plastic overlay is here to help you think you are actually playing a baseball game. Rules are also quite advanced for an Odyssey game with many subtilities.
Extract from [Chronogamer](http://www.chronogamer.com)'s review:\
"There are cards you can draw under certain conditions to indicate that an error, wild pitch, or pick-off has occurred. The pick-off is neat because if a batter draws it he can save it until later when he's pitching and use it when he sees fit. A batter can also choose to bunt, or to make a sacrifice fly. You can even have pinch hitters and relief pitchers."

Very simple baseball game but one of the earliest.

Player 1 (left side) can swing his bat, while player 2 can pitch in three ways: inside curve, straight and outside curve. Then player 2 attempts to catch the ball after it is hit by player 1 by moving fielders up and down...

It seems like all gaming systems must have their Baseball game, as early as 1978! Indeed the RCA Studio II, the Fairchild Channel F, the Bally Astrocade and the Atari VCS all had their Baseball game!
From [Chronogamer blog](http://www.atariage.com/forums/index.php?automodule=blog&blogid=87&showentry=1144):\
Another "green"-ish game. The controls are similar to other Baseball games. The outfielders are moved with the joystick, though you can't move them after the ball is pitched. They're spaced a little oddly, so there's usually a gap in right field that the computer player manages to hit to more often than not. To pitch, you send the ball with the fire button and control its path with the joystick. To bat you simply press the fire button.
The Bally's players are animated better, so if I had to rank this one by graphics, I'd place it as better than the Fairchild's version but not as good as the Bally's, based on overall look and player animations. Control-wise the Bally outfielders had a better range of motion, without the gap that the APF players can't seem to fill. At bat, it seems harder to get a hit on the APF than it does on the Bally and I don't feel I have the same control over where the ball is hit. Pitching is pretty similar in that you've got a lot of control over the ball after you "throw" it and it is fun to try to fake out the person at bat with wildly curving balls that they swing at anyway.
You can play with a friend or against the computer.

This Baseball videogame is the first of its genre. There had been a [Baseball](/software/baseball-349/) videogame on the Magnavox Odyssey, but it was not really the same thing, half the action being with paper cards.
This version is the first "real" baseball all-videogame. Many baseball games in the following years will be inspired by this one.

Basic Math was Atari's first educational game for the Atari VCS and also one of the 8 titles originaly released for this system in 1977.
Solve addition, substraction, multiplication and division problems. The game lets you know if you're right. If you're wrong, the correct answer flashes on the screen.
There are two modes:
**TABLE PROBLEMS**\
You pick the top number of the problem and the function (addition, substraction, multiplication or division). The system picks the bottom number. Solve it before the time is up.
**RANDOM PROBLEMS**\
You still pick the function. Only now the system picks both the top and bottom numbers.
From 1980, the name of the game was changed to "Fun With Numbers". It was also sold as "Math" by Sears.
Compared to other mathematical games released on other competitor systems the same year (1977), Basic Math is quite easy and targeted to young children. [Math Quiz I](/software/math-quiz-i/) and [Math Quiz II](/software/math-quiz-ii/) (Fairchild Channel F) for example, are much more challenging and thus interesting.

Basketball is the sixth videogame from Taito and maybe the first basketball videogame ever!
Basically, it's a pong variant where each player control two players (defenser and forward) at the same time with their unique knob (they thus can only move parallely).
The ball reacts as a normal pong game, but the the only way to score is to direct the ball into the basketball goals (from the top).
The gameplay is time limited. The timer is displayed at the top of the screen.
Each goal score 2 points.

Basketball was the first "real" basketball videogame. There has been pong variations before, but this basketball game from Atari was the first to use human shaped players (even if their animation is a bit silly) and a pseudo-3D playfield.
Moreover, it offers paced 2 player action along with real basketball features like dribbling, adjustable shots, defensive jumps or even stealing the ball from your adversary hands.
Here is some gameplay description from the manual:
"The player with the ball will dribble automatically and will always face the goal. The defending player will always face the ball.
To shoot, depress the red controller button. Your player will stop dribbling and will hold the ball, waving it back and forth over his head. When the controller button is released, the player will shoot. If the shot is made when the ball is over the player's head, it will be a long, high arching shot. If the shot is made when the ball is held low in front, it will be a short easy shot. The shot will always go towards the goal.
To defend against your opponent's shot, place yourself between the ball and the goal. When the shooter releases the ball, depress your red controller button. Your player will jump and you can block the shot and recover the ball. You can only block a shot when the ball is in its "upward" arc: there is no "goaltending" in this game.
To steal the ball, put the player's feet even with your opponent's feet. When the ball leaves your opponent's hand during the dribble, take the ball and race towards your own basket. Stealing the ball comes much easier with practice and will become an integral part of your defense strategy."
The game was programmed by Alan Miller who was himself a basketball player.

Battle Vader is of course a clone of the Space Invaders arcade hit from Taito, but adapted to the limited features of the Cassette Vision system. Thus only the front row of the invaders is visible, surely to limit de number of moving objects to display.
Your bunkers has to be shot three times before they are definately destroyed. Each time an invader hit one, it changes color according to the following cycle: red -> yellow -> blue. Only blue bunkers will be definately destroyed (anyone can confirm this?).
Of course there is still the mothership passing by sometimes at the top of the screen. Destroy hit for better score. At the end of the game this mothership will fly down the screen in zig zag as you must destroy hit before it reaches you.
The cartridge offer 4 different levels to play with.
This game was also marketed earlier as a stand alone system called [TV Vader](/museum/epoch-tv-vader/).

You have been given the ultimate responsability of protecting your galactic neighbours from the invaders. Blasting the aliens with the amazing anti-molecular cannon transport them thousand of light years away where they will cause no further bedlam. But beware the invaders will be increasingly ruthless. In the best tradition of 70s pong consoles, Big Sports 12 offers a selection of 12 variations on the Pong theme: 8 ball & paddle games and 4 shooters.

The pong games use the knobs built-in the console (up to 4 simultaneous players) and shooting games require the optional LightGun.

Use the Select switch to change options like rackets size, doubles, handicap, etc.

Biplane seems to be the first game of a long serie: plane dogfights! A biplane duel where each plane must shotdown the other as many time possible.

Another Blackjack game, but maybe the best one released in 1978, compared to its competitors (Channel F, Atari VCS, Bally Astrocade).

The APF M1000 is the only system to bother to include symbols for the suit!

You can choose the number of decks up to four that the dealer draws from.

Fairchild Channel F version released one year before (1976) was much more advanced.

Blockade is at the origin of all the surround-type games which will follow, including popular lightcycle game inspired by movie Tron. Even famous snake games owe everything to Blockade.
The principle is simple, you control a kind of snake (in fact a growing brick wall with an arrow at the end) and must last longer than your opponent on the playfield. You die if you crash into another wall (yours, your opponent's or walls surrounding the area). The best tactic is of course to try to surround your opponent so that he panics and gets trapped within the walls.
It's 2 player only game. You can't play against the computer. Even if it looks primtive now, Blockade was a real milestone in gaming history, creating a whole new genre of its own.
This was Gremlin's first video game. It provided Gremlin with a big hit, winning the 'Best of Show' award at the 1976 MOA convention.

Cartridge #3 plays six games: four pinball games (Bonus Pinball and Deluxe Pinball, each for 1 or 2 players), Shooting Gallery (shooting game on fixed targets), and Shoot the Bear (shooting game on "bears" as moving targets).
This cartridge does not use extra controllers: only the knobs and pistol of the console are used. The games of this cartridge are the same as those found on the Telstar Gemini system.

Nice bowling game, one of the earliest one, only preceded by RCA Studio II version.
Two playing modes are available: Normal and Split. In the Split Game, each frame starts with some combination of less than 10 pins. You have two balls to knock down the remaining pins. You can play with a friend or alone.
How the game work? The ball starts to roll down from the sides of the lane to the bottom of the playfield. Then, it is moving to-and-fro in front of the lane waiting for player interaction. Push up to release ball, then left to start the ball curving left, or right to start the ball curving right.

This game is simply the first ever Bowling video game known today !
It was programmed by Joseph Weisbecker on the 16th of august 1972 while developping the Fred concept at RCA.
This bowling concept eventually led to the bowling game found built-in the RCA Studio II videogame, also programmed by Joseph Weisbecker.
This version is a two players game, identified with X & O on the display. The game is played in 5 Frames, with 2 balls per frame for each player.
F1, F2 etc. indicates frame number on display. X1, X2, O1, O2 indicates player and ball number.
More incredibly, this game used sounds on tape when a ball is rolled ! The sounds on the tape were recordings from a bowling ball hitting targets, repeated multiple times.
There is no hook effects or anything like that. The player just has to press a key to launch the ball. But the randomness and incertitude of the game comes from the fact that the ball goes up and down in a erratic way, making it difficult to launch the ball at the desired position.

This cartridge offers two games: Bowling and Micro Match
**Bowling**\
This game is one of the earliest bowling videogame released, along with the [RCA Studio II version](/software/bowling/) (1977), the [Fairchild Channel F bowling](/software/bowling-328/) (1978) and the Atari VCS (1978). All of them seem to have been inspired by the first bowling arcade videogame [Robot Bowl](/software/robot-bowl/) (1977).
You can play Bowling for the APF-1000 with up to 4 players. Like the other bowling games of the time, your ball is moving constantly back and forth and you must decide when you want to throw it by pressing the fire button at the right moment. There is no way to put hook effect on the ball here.
**Micro Match**\
Micro Match is a memory game. The object of the game is to match the hidden object or word with a similar object or word. If you guess correctly, the squares will disappear from the screen and you go again.
Here again you can play with up to 4 players. There are 5 different game modes, from the easiest to the hardest, depending on what you must find (colors, patterns or words) and how many items (pairs or triplex)

Simple bowling game for two players. Your ball is moving continueously up and down on the left side of the screen. Players just have to choose the right moment to throw the ball with the desired effect: hook upward, straight or hook donwnward.
Pretty simple but one of the most enjoyable game for the RCA Studio II.
Also maybe the earliest Bowling video-game as the first arcade bowling version (Meadow Lanes) is dated 1977, and the bowling cartridge for Fairchild Channel F console was released in 1978.
