The Commodore 1200 baud modem is one of the peripherals pictured in the [C64 hardware gallery](/museum/commodore-c64/hardware/). With it, a home computer could dial into a bulletin board system and exchange messages and files.

The history section has an entry on the bulletin boards themselves: see [BBS, the World Wide Web father](/history/bbs-the-world-wide-web-father/).
