This was a real dream machine for me. I always used to go to the local department store and poke around on it whenever I could. I couldn''t afford one at the time but was always intrigued by its styling and the fact it had a PooYan cart :D It''s only now, many years later, that I have one of these beauties and combined with the sord m5 multi multicart (M5Multi-II) I can finally experience the machine in full. I''m not disappointed! |

Sord M5 was released from Gold Star Electronics (now LG) early 1980. Model number is FC-150. (FC means Family Computer)
I still have one in my home. Some of rubber keyboard is broken now but when I booted last time (10 years ago?) it works basically. I played a lot with this machine and later I know this was same model of M5. I bought BASIC-G and F. Interesting thing is there was BASIC-H (Korea only - can input/output Korean characters) and a series of English education software released as tape running on Basic-H.
Gold Star released a couple of game cartridges from Konami and Namco and even there is a game ported from MSX1!
It was my first PC and had a good time with it. |

I still have my Sord M5. I have to confess that I loved this little machine. What distinguished it from other machines was:\
- a version of BASIC which allowed proper variable names, subroutine names and labels (gosub TargetSprite is so much easier to understand than gosub 150)\
- astounding speed because of the clever semi-compilation of code which meant that a variable or a label address was looked up once and then referenced directly\
- interrupt-driven programming, which removes so much code bulk and tedium
The only down side for me was the small keyboard size. The joypads were different from the usual joystick, but I found that I preferred them. The small memory size was ameliorated by the efficiency of the interrupt-driven model, although one could always have used more (still true today!). |

Hello Christian, there are many other emulators you could try, like Takeda, Sordemu and M5.\
In my country (Spain) this was a very strange machine, but one of my friends (only one) had one of this machines. He really loved the M5, more than he loved his C64.\
No one of the people I have been meeting with the passing of time, owned another Sord M5, so this will let you to know how strange was the machine in my country.\
As it has been told, in many ways this is a MSX Machine (the same processor, the same graphics capabilities...) I think if it can''t be called MSX should be called MS 5.\
Greetings from Spain. |

Wooow... this brings back many memories. We bought an M5 in our home in 1982 when I was 10 yrs old. I started programming mainly with the Basic G module, but we also had and used the spreadsheet module FALC, which isnt mentioned anywhere. We had tons of games on tapes, and we had the floppydrive with 3" discs in solid plastic :)\
My parents still have it stowed away in a box, and I enjoy bringing it to life once in a while. Today I am a web devleoper on a technical college, and I have my own web-solution business as well - all thanks to the SORD M5. |
