I worked at Husky 1984-5 as the first marketing manager. Then Husky was my first client when I set up my PR consultancy. I learnt so much in that year. That piranha tank! And they really were indestructible! |

I have a Husky Hunter that has worked for years (of course), and fulfils a mission critical function at my local sailing club adjusting race timings according to a handicapping system. For some unknown reason, it has stopped responding to anything except CTL+Arrow Keys and CTL+LBL. All I can do is move the text around the screen and turn the function labels on and off. It won''t even power off. I''ve tried the X+P+Power that was mentioned elsewhere but to no avail. Does anyone have any ideas? Please help! |

I have a couple of the lemo plugs (unused) that could be used to charge the Husky. I programmed a batch of these for the NSW Dept of water resources using Basic and assembler. I seem to remember that there was a reset key combination to force a reset if it got stuck or went away. A bit like the cntl-alt-del for PCs. Cannot remember what it was but someone may remember it and it should help revive some of the non-working machines. |

I''ve just acquired a Husky FC486, non-working. I''d love to get this functioning as I''d like to donate it to my local computer museum but (probably due to the military target market) there''s very little information on it.
It gets power, beeps three times if the digitiser is disconnected but not at all if it''s connected. The screen just shows some coloured lines and it goes no further. Anyone shed any light on where to find service manuals etc? |

If anyone has a old Husky from pre 1984 then I’d love to purchase one. Thanks to Alex for reminding everyone my job at 16 without qualifications and an education behind me! Did give me a great grounding with some great people I ‘seeved’ Didn’t do to bad taking over the whole of service and Operations and now mixing it with the directors and board of JLR! :)
Thanks to Husky Computers I got an education and a desire to progress in industry. Brilliant times and sadly missed in Coventry! |

Worked at Husky Computers for 6 years from 1985, great product and testimony to David Viewing. Was head of head of special products in the end and loved the environment. Special thanks to mick teggin for being our stores boy running back and forth and the rare occasion he got it right it didn''t hold up speed of build.\
Top company and miss those days |

Oh my goodness! I''m so happy to come across this!
I worked at DVW Microelectronics / Husky Computers in the R$D department working on the firmware/operating system for the Husky Hunter. I added graphics support to the Basic interpreter and various communications protocols. The Hunter did not use a dedicated RS-232 UART and the whole serial communications was carried out using hardware interrupts hence the limited baud rate supported.
I wish I still had my old 80k model! |

A bunch of Huskies (FS/GS, Hunter and Hunter 16) landed on my desk this afternoon, together with a power supply. The connector is marked LEMO FGG 0B. Farnell do them but they''re £14.28+VAT. As they''re 4-pin the full part number MAY be FGG.0B.304 (the 305 is 5-pin) and are on eBay for £11.50. |

Here a new bit of information I have recently got on these machines. Not only do the keyboards customization options, but also customers of Husky could have custom OS''es installed on their machines. For example Optimal Software had custom OS''es on their Hunters, as well as a non-standard keyboard. |

Here''s some info on how to get them working if there''s no power on when first obtained.
Its always worth opening them up just to see if everything is OK.
Now the first thing to do is leave the battery''s in for a good few hours so they can charge the internal battery. The machine will not power on if it is depleted, however I have herd that they still power on with it removed.
If it switches on but powers of a second or less later, then set the date and time, Keep one key pressed to stop it powering off. This worked for me, might for you.
If you are having memory errors such as BASIC programs not working and it crashes when you try to use functions or search the DIR, then issue the "FORMAT" command. These three steps got my hunter working.
Hope this helps! $-) |

I have notest an error in continuenty that may have been overlooked. In the information text you say about it being used in 1983 but the specks say 1984.
Thought that should be brought to your attention as it could cause confusion. |

They really are indestructible. I saw a guy $ one while trying to stick it in the compartment on top of his van. The funny thing was that it happened only a few minutes after he powered it up to test it when I sold it to him. I''ve sold them on average for $3,500 (USD). |

Having just had a bad result today at my hotel from CAPCON (beverage stocktaking) I was minded to think how archaic their software is. My first experience of the Husky Hunter (and I have one, though not in use) was in my first accounts position as Food $ Beverage Controller at the Pembroke Hotel in Blackpool (now the Hilton) in 1987. The Husky was loaded with "Innventory" (Leamington Spa based company, now extinct) software and I used the Husky as a "hand held" wandering around the bars punching in the stock counts then went back to my desk and plugged into printer and produced the reports. Great computer. Needed a great memory (mine, that is) to remember all the product codes.\
Must dig it out soon. I was always told it was worth £3,000. Anyone know how much it actually was worth? |

When I worked at the McDonalds in Croydon back in the early 90''s we used these for the time clock. It slid into a wallbox that had a built in Bar Code reader and we all had little plastic cards with our info. we would slide the card and hit In, Break, or Out. At the end of the shift the Hunter was pulled out of the card reader and uploaded into the main computer. |

Hi folks\
I have tinkered with Huskies over the years and must say they were pretty special beasts!\
I have a friend who is 76 and still runs a one-man company doing pub stocktaking using a couple of Husky Hunters that I keep going for him. Says a lot about his stamina and the Husky! We are down to one tape drive for the units now which could be a problem - can anyone point me at any information of these drives?\

I was just reading an article on the Coventry Evening Telegraph about how locals don''t appreciate some of the ''firsts'' Coventry was responsible for, including the bicycle and the handheld computer. I didn''t realise that the Husky was and made me proud to have been part of the company from 1985 to 1990, working in production with Peter Schofield, Doreen Dick and Richard Kantor. Really good memories working there, we were well looked after$ who can forget the visit of the Sky Bues in 1987 during the build up to the FA Cup win!
Although we left Coventry seven years ago, I look at the space where the Courtaulds building used to stand, and think of the good times I had there.
Great product that I was proud to have a small part in. |

I got a 350KB model with specific keyboard (numeric keys at a side).
The hunter completed his IBM friendly ability wuith built in EBCDIC translation.\
The keyboard was completely 'soft' and customizable with poke's from BASIC. The endurance time of 45 hours only is achieved with Alkaline batteries, with NiCd they only last about 16 hour. The Husky's manual embraces proudly 'full compatibility with cp/m programs for z80 and 8080 procesors. |

I saw one thrown from an exhibition stand onto a concrete floor. Worked perfectly. Years later, I was able to buy one secondhand from a government surplus depot. It came with an equally tough dot-matrix printer which held the Hunter in a cradle. I was told the one I bought had been a fire control system on a British artillery piece. One little feature was a strip of indicator paper visible in the display window: it changed colour if the environmental seal failed and humidity entered the system. If it had been y2k compliant, I'd be using it still! |

I used to live just a few miles from Husky's small production plant in\
Coventry. They were great and innovative machines but incredibly expensive, and even today the British Army still use these incredibly tough systems for field operations (I think Husky was taken over by a foreign company a number of years ago). They said these computers could withstand a tank driving over them... errr, I'm not so sure about that ! |
